Merry B A F D!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year.  At least, it’s suppose to be.  This is a different holiday season that people my age and younger have never seen.  Sure the Malls are busy and plans are underway for holiday parties, but is this really good news?

We have been spoon fed that the local Pittsburgh economy is not in recession.  Listen close to national reports and you will discover that this country is in a lot trouble.  Who knows what will happen come this spring.  Layoffs and pay cuts are everywhere.   Just visit the many glbt bars and establishments and you will discover a downturn in spending.

Is there a silver lining here?  Maybe, but you must scratch the surface to discover it.

Change is coming to Pittsburgh and this country.  And, not only on January 20.  Will president-elect Obama have the right solutions for the US economy?

We hope for change, but will change bring Hope?  I must believe it will.

Back to my main point.  Just yesterday, I was talking to a woman about Christmas and gifts that come from it.  She instructed me that she was recently laid off from her job and was the breadwinner in her household.  I thought I knew where the conversation was headed, but to my surprise, she focused on her blessings and how much she had to be thankful for.  Her family, health and the hope of a better life were more important than her losing her job.

You see, by losing her job, she was able to rediscover what was most important in her life.  This was something forgotten a long time ago.

I ask you to ask yourself this question.  Can discovering what is most important in your life be better than any material thing we can give ourselves or our children?  I think the answer is obvious.

Just if only for a day, remember how important you are as a mother, father, partner, son, daughter, brother, sister,  friend, co-worker or person.

If your life is empty, go out and make a difference for someone else.  Volunteer at the glbt community center, Shepherd Wellness, PATF,  visit sick members of the community or simply just be a friend.

It doesn’t matter what the day is called, however for the sake of this blog and message, lets call it Be A Friend Day.

Merry Be A Friend Day!
