Labels

Labels.  Everyone has many, but some are not welcome.

How many labels do you have?

Start writing them down and you will realize the answer to that question.  Some good, some bad and some we don’t even know about…like the ones people place on us to discredit what we have achieved and lack there of.

True, I have been labeled many of things, most of which I have reservations about identifying in this blog.

My list goes something like this:  Husband, father, publisher, friend, sports fan, co-worker, owner, bloggist, salesperson, gay, male, white, middle aged (this one hurts.  Is 42 middle aged anyway?), voter, smart (and sometimes smart ass), entrepreneur, risk taker, non-traditional, family oriented, gambler, business man, talk show host, boss, brother, son, life-partner, boy friend (or in the gay world, BF), traveler, donor, volunteer and more.   I have been called much worse things, but you get the picture.

When we reflect on labels, we can get a better understanding of where we come from or where we are headed.  Certainly, many labels are not true descriptions of who we are, but how we may be seen.  Or, that ex-BF is trying to damage your rep.  Wait!  Let’s backup one second.  Many of you deserve those labels and he is only trying to protect your future ex-BF.  That bitter queen!

One label I did not include above is good human being.  I did not include it because that is a work in progress.  If I can achieve this label, my life would be considered a major success.  I know, you are probably thinking…what a bunch of self-righteous crap?  If I welcome and deserve just that one label, all the rest of my labels would be positive and an example of what kind of person my kid’s will look up to or my husband would greet each day as he awakes.  And, considering I have only had one BF for the past 20 years and there will be no future ex-BF, I am safe.

So accept the good and positive labels.  And, by no means accept the negative ones.  If they happen to be true, you will know what you need.

The next time someone tell you they are not into labels, they are lying.   Just kidding.

Unfortunately, labels are placed on us, but fortunately, you too can take advantage of them–much like that first BF at Pegasus back in 1983 took advantage of you.

Just a thought.  Perhaps not a pretty one.
