Obama: ‘I’m A Christian By Choice’

clip_image001

President Obama’s opponents enjoy taking aim at his religion, and have worked overtime to paint him as Muslim, which to many conservatives is worse than practicing no faith at all.
Though the Commander-in-Chief has tried and tried to convince people he’s Christian, his efforts often fall flat: almost 20% of voters still think he practices Islam. Perhaps the President’s unscripted reply in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will quiet some of his religious critics.

"Why are you a Christian?" asked a woman today, leading Obama, who’s traveling around four Republican-leaning states, to answer, “I’m a Christian by choice."

He went on to explain, "I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead. Being my brothers and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me, and I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings."

Of course, skeptics and cynics will likely suggest the White House planted this woman there to ask that very question. Because, you know, the administration doesn’t have anything else to worry about… like DADT, DOMA, Economy, the upcoming elections.

Montana Town Sides With Gay Couples In State Suit

clip_image002

Much of the gay-related news coming out of Montana recently has been bad: the state Republican party’s platform criminalizes sex, GOP candidate for the state legislature Jason Priest referred to economist John Maynard Keynes as a "big homo" and state House candidate Kristi Allen-Gailusha declared "war" on LGBT people.
Now, after all that, here’s some good news: the city of Bozeman’s council sided unanimously with seven couples who have filed a suit against the state for equal protections under the Montana’s constitution.
Local NBC affiliate KTVM reports:

Commissioners urged the public to be open and accepting of all people, and told the crowd on hand that is why they wanted Bozeman to be known as a welcoming place.

"It is the philosophy of respect and showing that understanding, that we are trying to be one as a community. We are trying to show that respect," Commissioner Chris Mehl said.

Commissioners said they will send copies of the Resolution to Montana’s officials at the state level. They said they hoped the state would follow suit, and grant the couples equal rights.

Upon introducing the resolution, Mayor Krauss reminded his peers, "There are kids out there that are terrified of who they are… They need to hear they are all welcome here and yes life for you can be normal here in Bozeman."

Another teen suicide

clip_image003 clip_image004

The parents of Asher Brown, an eighth-grader who committed suicide last Thursday, say that their son killed himself due to relentless antigay bullying at his Houston school.
Houston Chronicle reports, the mother and stepfather of Brown said that constant harassment at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District prompted their 13-year-old son to shoot himself in the head.

“Brown, his family said, was ‘bullied to death’ — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes,” reported the Chronicle. “Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.”
David and Amy Truong said that the school never responded to several complaints they made in the past 18 months. The school district said they never received any complaints from the parents, teachers or other students.  "I did not hallucinate phone calls to counselors and assistant principals. We have no reason to make this up. It’s like they’re calling us liars," said Mrs. Truong, while her husband insisted, "We want justice. The people here need to be held responsible and to be stopped. It did happen. There are witnesses everywhere."

Now, Asher’s parents hope to use his death as a lesson: "Our son is just the extreme case of what happens when (someone is) just relentless," insisted Mrs. Truong, before turning her attention to the bullies, "I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done. I hope you got what you wanted and you’re just real satisfied with yourself."
The Chronicle reported that the morning Brown died, he told his stepfather that he was gay. David Truong said he was OK with the revelation.

GLAAD TV Study Reveals More Gay Characters, Mostly On ABC Or True Blood

clip_image006 clip_image007 clip_image008 clip_image009 clip_image010 clip_image011

True Blood                                       Modern Family        Brothers and Sisters          Desperate Housewives       Greys Anatomy             Glee

GLAAD today released its 15th annual "Where We Are On TV" review of LGBT television characters on broadcast and cable television shows. It’s a mixed bag.

The good news: gay people are more visible on television than ever; the bad news: there is not one LGBT person of color on broadcast television. Actually, there’s not a "T" either.

The report shows that 23 LGBT characters will account for 3.9% of scripted series regulars in the 2010-2011 broadcast television schedule, up from 1.1% in 2007, 2.6% in 2008, and 3% in 2009. The number of scripted LGBT series regulars found on mainstream cable networks has rebounded after a two year decline, from 40 in 2007, 32 in 2008, 25 in 2009, to 35 this year.

In cable, True Blood takes the cake for having the most LGBT characters, 6 regular, and network ABC wins, again, for having 7.2% of their regular characters — eleven out of 152 — be of the LGBT variety. CBS, meanwhile, came in dead last for having only one LGBT character, the network’s first since 2006.

Is it still a big deal when famous heteros appear on the covers of gay magazines? How about when those famous heteros are married-with-children sports stars from the masculine world of cricket?
Straight Brit Athlete Strips to Show Positive ‘Attitude’ Toward Gays

clip_image012 clip_image013 clip_image014 clip_image015

Straight British cricket star Jimmy Anderson is planning to take his clothes off in the October issue of Attitude to show his support for gay people:

AFP reports: "Usually the only nudes in cricket are pitch invaders who ’streak’ across the wicket, and Anderson admitted he will probably get ’some stick’ for taking part in the shoot by fashion photographer Ram Shergill. But insisted he was ‘more than prepared’ to shed his clothes. He added: ‘If there are any gay cricketers, they should feel confident enough to come out, because I don’t think there is homophobia in cricket. Football fans can be quite abusive and quite harsh, and cricket fans can be like that sometimes, but they are generally quite placid and there to watch the game and support their team.’ Asked how he would react if a cricketer came out, he said: ‘I’d throw them a special gay cricket tea.’ Attitude Editor Matthew Todd said the cricketer’s decision would send a ’strong, playful signal’ that sportsmen can be comfortable with homosexuality among team-mates and fans."

Has any major straight male U.S. athlete made such a gesture? And if not, who might be the first?

Inhofe Warns of ‘Open Gay Activity’ After DADT Repeal

clip_image004

Senator James Inhofe’s (R-OK) Values Voters Summit speech against gays in the military.

Inhofe asked those listeners to call their senators and tell them to vote against the DADT repeal.

"Your message is this. Vote ‘no’. And if you vote ‘yes’ you are voting for open gay activity in the military and you’re voting for abortions in our hospitals."

Regarding abortions, Inhofe is referring to a separate amendment that repeals the prohibition in the use of private funds to pay for abortion care in military hospitals.

Yet Another Gay Teen Lost to Bullying Suicide — in Minnesota

clip_image002

WCCO reports on the tragic death of Justin Aaberg, which happened in July:

"Justin Aaberg came out as gay when he was 13 and, as his mom found out only after he hanged himself, suffered tremendously inside. ‘I actually thought he had the perfect life. I thought out of anybody I knew that he had the perfect life,’ said Justin Aaberg’s mother, Tammy Aaberg. ‘But I guess he didn’t think so.’ In the weeks since she found her son dead in his room on July 9, Tammy Aaberg has heard from many of her son’s friends at Anoka High School. They told her Justin Aaberg had been bullied and had recently broken up with his boyfriend. Those same students also opened up about their own experiences, telling her they feel harassed and unsafe as gay and lesbian students. ‘These kids, they just hate themselves. They literally feel like they want to die. So many kids are telling me this,’ said Tammy Aaberg, fighting tears."

Watch the heartbreaking video HERE.

There were five suicides in the Anoka-Hennepin District last year, and a lesbian student there as well as a teacher believe at least three were attributable to anti-gay bullying.

The school district asks teachers to "remain neutral" on the bullying because of some conservative dipshits in the district who apparently don’t want "gay" being addressed at school:

"…name-calling and bullying happen often in the district because teachers and students don’t stand up to it. The teachers said that’s partly because other teachers are scared and confused about how to interpret the curriculum policy.  The Anoka-Hennepin School District said the curriculum policy and bullying are two entirely separate issues. ‘It’s very difficult. We have a community that has widely varying opinions, and so to respect all families, as the policy says, we ask teachers to remain neutral,’ said District Spokeswoman Mary Olson."

Study: 9 of 10 LGBT Students Face Harassment at School

On the heels of the awful news out of Indiana this morning comes this 10-year study on bullying from the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

clip_image003"The 2009 survey of 7,261 middle and high school students found that at school nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT students experienced harassment at school in the past year and nearly two-thirds felt unsafe because of their sexual orientation. Nearly a third of LGBT students skipped at least one day of school in the past month because of safety concerns. An analysis of National School Climate Survey data over 10 years showed that since 1999 there has been a decreasing trend in the frequency of hearing homophobic remarks; however, LGBT students’ experiences with more severe forms of bullying and harassment have remained relatively constant."

Said GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard: "In 1999, GLSEN began data collection on the school experiences of LGBT students in order to fill a critical void in our knowledge and understanding of the ways LGBT issues play out in schools. It could not be clearer that there is an urgent need for action to create safe and affirming schools for LGBT students. As our nation seems to finally be taking bullying more seriously, it is crucial that LGBT students are no longer left out of efforts to address this public health crisis."

KEY SURVEY FINDINGS, AFTER THE JUMP

Student Experiences, a Hostile School Climate and the Effects on Educational Outcomes and Psychological Well-Being:

  • 84.6% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 40.1% reported being physically harassed and 18.8% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation.
  • 63.7% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 27.2% reported being physically harassed and 12.5% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their gender expression.
  • 72.4% heard homophobic remarks, such as "faggot" or "dyke," frequently or often at school.
  • Nearly two-thirds (61.1%) of students reported that they felt unsafe in school because of their sexual orientation, and more than a third (39.9%) felt unsafe because of their gender expression.
  • 29.1% of LGBT students missed a class at least once and 30.0% missed at least one day of school in the past month because of safety concerns, compared to only 8.0% and 6.7%, respectively, of a national sample of secondary school students.
  • The reported grade point average of students who were more frequently harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender expression was almost half a grade lower than for students who were less often harassed (2.7 vs. 3.1).
  • Increased levels of victimization were related to increased levels of depression and anxiety and decreased levels of self-esteem.
  • Being out in school had positive and negative repercussions for LGBT students – outness was related to higher levels of victimization, but also higher levels of psychological well-being.

Positive Interventions and Support:

  • Having a Gay-Straight Alliance in school was related to more positive experiences for LGBT students, including: hearing fewer homophobic remarks, less victimization because of sexual orientation and gender expression, less absenteeism because of safety concerns and a greater sense of belonging to the school community.
  • The presence of supportive staff contributed to a range of positive indicators including fewer reports of missing school, fewer reports of feeling unsafe, greater academic achievement, higher educational aspirations and a greater sense of school belonging.
  • Students attending schools with an anti-bullying policy that included protections based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity/expression heard fewer homophobic remarks, experienced lower levels of victimization related to their sexual orientation, were more likely to report that staff intervened when hearing homophobic remarks and were more likely to report incidents of harassment and assault to school staff than students at schools with a general policy or no policy.
  • Despite the positive benefits of these interventions, less than a half of LGBT students (44.6%) reported having a Gay-Straight Alliance at school, slightly more than half (53.4%) could identify six or more supportive educators and less than a fifth (18.2%) attended a school that had a comprehensive anti-bullying policy.

School Climate Over Time: 1999-2009

  • There was a steady decline in the frequency of hearing homophobic remarks from 1999 to 2003. In recent years, between 2005 and 2009, students’ reports of hearing these types of remarks have not decreased significantly.
  • LGBT students’ experiences of harassment and assault have remained relatively constant over time. However, there were small but significant decreases in frequencies of verbal harassment, physical harassment and physical assault from 2007 to 2009.
  • There has been an increase over time in the presence of several LGBT-related resources and supports in school, specifically: Gay-Straight Alliances or other student clubs that address LGBT issues in education; school staff who were supportive of LGBT students; and LGBT-related materials in school libraries

Two Men in Women’s Clothing Found Shot Beside Road in Puerto Rico

Two men in women’s clothing were found dead beside a road in Puerto Rico on Monday, the Canadian Press reports:

clip_image006"A police officer discovered the victims, each one shot in the head, during a pre-dawn patrol in the city of Juana Diaz, according to a police statement. An unidentified 28-year-old man has been arrested and his car seized in connection with the case. Pedro Julio Serrano, the founder of the gay rights group Puerto Rico for All, said the island’s laws obligate authorities to investigate whether the double slaying was motivated by the victims’ sexual orientation or gender identity. Serrano said nine gay and transsexual people have been killed over the last 10 months in Puerto Rico, which has recorded a total of 682 slayings this year. He said authorities have not responded adequately to what he called a wave of crime targeting gays."

Change

Change is good, right?  Some things but not others.  For instance changes at home is not always good.  I love my life with Ed and the boys and nothing changing there suits me just fine.  Now, change with my blog is good.  Quite frankly, I was over the look.   I think this new look is much better.

Last night, I got to watch my kid perform in the band.  His school played Kittanning at Kittanning.  We won, but it was close.  Too close when you are a AAAA team playing a AAA team that got their butt kicked the week before by a AA team.  Follow that?

Cold night, but was worth it.  My dad and brother where there.  Ed was with one of our other sons back home for a soccer game.  This is your life when you have kids.  Like I said above, I love my life.

Today, I went to the Pitt game.  Pitt won, but that was expected.  I am so over hot dogs, pizza and nachos!  You know–sporting event food.  Ed and I have eating poorly all week because of the games and we are both over it.  The perfect excuse for Chinese.  And, that is exactly what was served for dinner.  China Palace in Monroeville fit the bill perfectly.

I want to remind everyone that if you are considering an ad in Out’s October Halloween edition, and I strongly suggest you do to reach up to 30,000 perople,  please hurry, deadline is the 15th.  Email me at tony@outonline.com or call my office at 412-381-3350.

As I type, I am sitting here watching Ed make a dish for Rally Day at Church tomorrow.  Considering all the problems at our church, he remains very devoted and he completely understands why it is important to fight and stand up for the ELCA.

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.  Check back here for more updates about my life and news of interest for our community.

Questions for those leaving ELCA
Herbert W. Chilstrom

By the end of 2010 several hundred congregations (an estimated 2-3% of more than 10,300) will have left the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to form other Lutheran church bodies. I have three questions for those leaving:

First, what is it about sex that pushed you over the edge?
Since its founding more than twenty years ago the ELCA has wrestled with a number of complex issues, never binding anyone’s conscience, but helping us think about them. Included among them have been studies and statements on abortion, the death penalty and war. These three issues all involve the potential for taking a life. That seems far more serious than getting upset about two adults of the same gender who, like most of us straight folks, chose to live peacefully in a life-long relationship - the only such pairing the ELCA has approved. Like their straight neighbors, they live peacefully, go to their jobs every morning, pay their taxes, volunteer for good causes and, in many cases, worship with us. What is it that upsets you about this?
The only answer I seem to get from those leaving is that “this was the last straw.” But that still begs the question, “Why sex?” Surely some other divisive issue will come along - as it always does in every human institution - that could be “the last straw” in a new church body.

Second, why are you organizing new churches
?
The picture is confusing. We hear of one called “Lutheran Churches in Mission for Christ” (LCMC) and another named “Lutheran Church in North America” (LCNA). This seems wasteful to those of us standing on the sidelines. Why not join an existing Lutheran church that agrees with your views on sex?
There are many choices: the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (headquartered here in Mankato), the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations, and Church of the Lutheran Brethren - to name just a handful of more than two dozen in the United States. Surely there must be one among them that would welcome you. Why go to all the unnecessary expense of setting up an entirely new structure with officers, boards, committees and institutions?
I suspect the only reason is because none of them ordain women. Well, it’s good to know that you welcome women to your clergy ranks. But have you forgotten that it was only a short time ago when Lutherans fought intensely over that issue? Many were certain that neither the Bible nor tradition permitted women to be ordained. Why not drop your insistence on the ordination of women for the sake of unity with some existing church body?

Third, what will you say to your sons and daughters, sisters and brothers and others in your churches when they tell you they are homosexual
?
You will no doubt suggest that they seek “reparative” therapy, even though more than 95% of professionals in the field tell us there’s nothing to “repair” because they are no more abnormal than the rest of us. Or, you may tell them they must simply remain alone, denying them of a life-long partnership.
All of which brings us back to the first question:
What is it about sex that pushed you over the edge?
I am both sad and relieved that you are leaving. Sad, because this was not what we hoped for when the ELCA was formed some 22 years ago. We believed we could be a church where we held to the essentials and allowed for differences on non-essentials.
But I am also relieved. Now those of us who remain in the ELCA can get on with our primary mission of telling everyone — everyone, “
Jesus loves you. You are welcome in this church.”

(Herbert W. Chilstrom, a resident of St. Peter, was the first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.)

Governor Rick Perry: Texas is ‘a Land of Opportunity’ Unless You’re Gay and Want to Marry Someone in the audience wanted to know if the governor of Texas wants to be the next president of the United States. “No,” Perry said. “I have no intention to go to Washington, D.C., except maybe to go to a museum, like the Smithsonian.” “There is still a land of opportunity, friends — it’s called Texas,” Perry said. “We’re creating more jobs than any other state in the nation. … Would you rather live in a state like this, or in a state where a man can marry a man?”

My favorite Emmys 2010 Top Momenthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBEp7XawX7k&feature=player_embedded#! Can you believe Glen Beck now?American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer ripped Glenn Beck a new a-hole (so to speak) for his recent statements in support of same-sex marriage, accusing Beck of siding with “people who want to use the anus for sex.” It’s not too late to issue a mea culpa and come back into the light and be a vigorous advocate once again for the truth about marriage and the family. You have done a noble thing in calling this country back to God through your “Divine Destiny” evening at the Kennedy Center and your “Restoring Honor” event at the Lincoln Memorial. You have done a noble thing on your radio and television programs by repeatedly calling us back to our founding history and to our foundational values as a country. But Glenn, our “Divine Destiny” as a nation does not include societal approval for people who want to use the anus for sex. The “Laws of Nature and Nature’s God” don’t endorse such behavior. And neither should you. What an idiot!

AND HERE IS WHAT HE SAID, AND I QUOTE:
Glenn Beck says Gay Marriage is Not a Threat to America Bill O’Reilly asked Glenn Beck about threats to the country, and asked him his thoughts on gay marriage.

Said Beck: “Honestly, I think we have bigger fish to fry.   Umm…  yes there are bigger fish, but Marriage Equality is extremely important to many of our citizens.

You can argue about abortion or gay marriage or whatever all you want.  The country is burning down…I don’t think marriage, that the government actually has anything to do with…that is a religious right…I believe that Thomas Jefferson said, ‘If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket, what difference is it to me?’”  If the country is burning down, who started the fire?  You know exactly who did Mr. Beck.
