Obama: ‘I’m A Christian By Choice’

clip_image001

President Obama’s opponents enjoy taking aim at his religion, and have worked overtime to paint him as Muslim, which to many conservatives is worse than practicing no faith at all.
Though the Commander-in-Chief has tried and tried to convince people he’s Christian, his efforts often fall flat: almost 20% of voters still think he practices Islam. Perhaps the President’s unscripted reply in Albuquerque, New Mexico, will quiet some of his religious critics.

"Why are you a Christian?" asked a woman today, leading Obama, who’s traveling around four Republican-leaning states, to answer, “I’m a Christian by choice."

He went on to explain, "I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead. Being my brothers and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me, and I think also understanding that Jesus Christ dying for my sins spoke to the humility we all have to have as human beings."

Of course, skeptics and cynics will likely suggest the White House planted this woman there to ask that very question. Because, you know, the administration doesn’t have anything else to worry about… like DADT, DOMA, Economy, the upcoming elections.

Montana Town Sides With Gay Couples In State Suit

clip_image002

Much of the gay-related news coming out of Montana recently has been bad: the state Republican party’s platform criminalizes sex, GOP candidate for the state legislature Jason Priest referred to economist John Maynard Keynes as a "big homo" and state House candidate Kristi Allen-Gailusha declared "war" on LGBT people.
Now, after all that, here’s some good news: the city of Bozeman’s council sided unanimously with seven couples who have filed a suit against the state for equal protections under the Montana’s constitution.
Local NBC affiliate KTVM reports:

Commissioners urged the public to be open and accepting of all people, and told the crowd on hand that is why they wanted Bozeman to be known as a welcoming place.

"It is the philosophy of respect and showing that understanding, that we are trying to be one as a community. We are trying to show that respect," Commissioner Chris Mehl said.

Commissioners said they will send copies of the Resolution to Montana’s officials at the state level. They said they hoped the state would follow suit, and grant the couples equal rights.

Upon introducing the resolution, Mayor Krauss reminded his peers, "There are kids out there that are terrified of who they are… They need to hear they are all welcome here and yes life for you can be normal here in Bozeman."

Another teen suicide

clip_image003 clip_image004

The parents of Asher Brown, an eighth-grader who committed suicide last Thursday, say that their son killed himself due to relentless antigay bullying at his Houston school.
Houston Chronicle reports, the mother and stepfather of Brown said that constant harassment at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District prompted their 13-year-old son to shoot himself in the head.

“Brown, his family said, was ‘bullied to death’ — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes,” reported the Chronicle. “Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.”
David and Amy Truong said that the school never responded to several complaints they made in the past 18 months. The school district said they never received any complaints from the parents, teachers or other students.  "I did not hallucinate phone calls to counselors and assistant principals. We have no reason to make this up. It’s like they’re calling us liars," said Mrs. Truong, while her husband insisted, "We want justice. The people here need to be held responsible and to be stopped. It did happen. There are witnesses everywhere."

Now, Asher’s parents hope to use his death as a lesson: "Our son is just the extreme case of what happens when (someone is) just relentless," insisted Mrs. Truong, before turning her attention to the bullies, "I hope you’re happy with what you’ve done. I hope you got what you wanted and you’re just real satisfied with yourself."
The Chronicle reported that the morning Brown died, he told his stepfather that he was gay. David Truong said he was OK with the revelation.

GLAAD TV Study Reveals More Gay Characters, Mostly On ABC Or True Blood

True Blood                                       Modern Family        Brothers and Sisters          Desperate Housewives       Greys Anatomy             Glee

GLAAD today released its 15th annual "Where We Are On TV" review of LGBT television characters on broadcast and cable television shows. It’s a mixed bag.

The good news: gay people are more visible on television than ever; the bad news: there is not one LGBT person of color on broadcast television. Actually, there’s not a "T" either.

The report shows that 23 LGBT characters will account for 3.9% of scripted series regulars in the 2010-2011 broadcast television schedule, up from 1.1% in 2007, 2.6% in 2008, and 3% in 2009. The number of scripted LGBT series regulars found on mainstream cable networks has rebounded after a two year decline, from 40 in 2007, 32 in 2008, 25 in 2009, to 35 this year.

In cable, True Blood takes the cake for having the most LGBT characters, 6 regular, and network ABC wins, again, for having 7.2% of their regular characters — eleven out of 152 — be of the LGBT variety. CBS, meanwhile, came in dead last for having only one LGBT character, the network’s first since 2006.

Is it still a big deal when famous heteros appear on the covers of gay magazines? How about when those famous heteros are married-with-children sports stars from the masculine world of cricket?
Straight Brit Athlete Strips to Show Positive ‘Attitude’ Toward Gays

clip_image012 clip_image013 clip_image014 clip_image015

Straight British cricket star Jimmy Anderson is planning to take his clothes off in the October issue of Attitude to show his support for gay people:

AFP reports: "Usually the only nudes in cricket are pitch invaders who ’streak’ across the wicket, and Anderson admitted he will probably get ’some stick’ for taking part in the shoot by fashion photographer Ram Shergill. But insisted he was ‘more than prepared’ to shed his clothes. He added: ‘If there are any gay cricketers, they should feel confident enough to come out, because I don’t think there is homophobia in cricket. Football fans can be quite abusive and quite harsh, and cricket fans can be like that sometimes, but they are generally quite placid and there to watch the game and support their team.’ Asked how he would react if a cricketer came out, he said: ‘I’d throw them a special gay cricket tea.’ Attitude Editor Matthew Todd said the cricketer’s decision would send a ’strong, playful signal’ that sportsmen can be comfortable with homosexuality among team-mates and fans."

Has any major straight male U.S. athlete made such a gesture? And if not, who might be the first?
