We interviewed three cast members of Stop Kiss from Off The Wall Theater in Washington, PA. 147 N. Main Street, www.insideoffthewall.com. The girls were fun. Watch the interview on http://www.outonline.com Talk It Out show.
“Stop Kiss ” runs Dec. 3-18, 2010
Written by Diana Son. A funny, poignant story of two heretofore heterosexual women who unexpectedly fall in love, provoking a violent attack that transforms their lives forever. This evocative play explores our assumptions about love and reminds us of what a profound privilege it can be when we choose, and are chosen, to care for another.
Written in scenes that alternate between the present and the past, Stop Kiss pays homage to life’s abrupt and unexpected transformations, to romance, and to the search for personal identity, all the while explaining how soci-ety stereotypes people, and the pain that can come from simply being who we are.
Directed by: Robyne Parrish
Featuring: Theo Allyn, Karen Baum, Erika Cuenca, Linda Haston, F.J. Hartland, Matt Lamb, Atom Pribila

Tony Perkins Objects to The FAMILY Research Council’s Hate Group Classification, on ‘Hardball’

Warhol director Sokolowski steps down
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh announced on Monday that Tom Sokolowski has resigned as director of the Warhol Museum, effective Dec. 31.
He leaves behind an institution at the top of its game that has exported its namesake to five continents and changed the activist face of Pittsburgh.
Tom Sokolowski
Mr. Sokolowski, 60, the museum’s third director, said he felt it was time to move on.
"At this point I think I’ve been here too long. And change is a good thing."
The decision to leave was Mr. Sokolowski’s. "There have been times when I felt I was repeating myself," he said, referring to some of the museum’s programming.
Mr. Sokolowski said the museum is in good shape, having had another banner year of attendance, admission revenues over budget, more critical success internationally, and both trustee donations and requests for its traveling shows rising.

D.C. Marriage Bureau Rejects Gay Couple Married via Skype
The marriage bureau of Washington D.C. has rejected a certificate of marriage filed by D.C. officiant Shelia Alexander-Reid, who married Dallas couple Thomas Mark Reed and Dante Karl Walkup, over Skype, earlier this month.
"The D.C. marriage bureau kicked back the certificate we had filed," Alexander-Reid told me today. Alexander-Reid says that she and the couple both received letters from D.C. Superior Court stating that it had determined the marriage license filed following the Skype ceremony to be invalid.
"The return is invalid because it has come to the attention of the court that the subject contracting parties to the marriage and you, the officiant, did not all personally participate in a marriage ceremony performed within the jurisdictional and territorial limits of the District of Columbia," the letter reads.
Alexander-Reid also received a fresh marriage license from the court. Alexander-Reid could use it to re-officiate a Reed-Walkup ceremony, should they choose to marry again in D.C., this time "with all parties . . . in physical attendance."
Check out their marriage and message behind it in this video.

Openly Lesbian Australian MP Who Once Opposed Gay Marriage Now Comes Out In Support Of It
Australian Finance Minister Penny Wong, Australia’s very first openly gay cabinet member, has gotten much heat from the LGBT community for her opposition of gay marriage. Now Looks like Wong is in full support of marriage equality:
The Sydney Morning Herald reports:
Senator Wong has been criticised in the past for putting her role as a cabinet minster ahead of her personal views and declining to support gay marriage.
At the state conference, she said she knew what it was like to be the subject of prejudice.
”I have had the opportunity to advocate for equality at the highest levels of our party and within our party processes, as I do today,” she said. ”And I will do so at the next national conference. Talking about change is not the same as delivering it.”
The motion means South Australia and Northern Territory Labor branches have both changed policy in recent weeks to support gay marriage.
Alex Greenwich of the Australian Marriage Equality points out the significance of her announcement: "Senator Wong’s public support for reform will not only make a difference when the issue is debated at the Labor national conference - it also reinforces the message to the Australian public that gay Australians are united in our desire for full legal equality."

John McCain Says That DADT "Is Working"
Just days before the Pentagon releases its survey on "don’t ask, don’t tell," John McCain took to CNN’s "State of the Union" with Candy Crowly today to once again speak in favor of the policy.
CNN’s Political Tracker blog reports on his appearance on the show: "The military is at its highest point in recruitment, in retention, in professionalism, in capability so to somehow allege that this policy has been damaging the military is simply false."
"Instead, McCain called the attempt at repeal ‘a political promise made by an inexperienced president or candidate for president of the United States. I want to know the effect on battle effectiveness and morale, not on how best to implement the change in policy.
I don’t think that’s a lot to ask when we have our young men and women out there serving and fighting and tragically some of them dying.’"

Michigan Newspaper Runs Anti-Gay Ad
Several months ago, Family Research Council and Request Foods took out a full-page ad in Michigan’s Holland Sentinel. The ad was a list of lies about gays and lesbians. Looks like another homophobic ad has made its way onto the pages of the newspaper.
The half-page ad features a picture of two men in a casual embrace along with anti-gay biblical quotes and the phrase “How sad when God’s original design is twisted.” It was put together and paid for by a Pastor named Earl Shetler, who also runs a tree removal service in Saugatuck, Michigan, a popular gay and lesbain resort town.

John Travolta’s Legal Team: Gay Allegations ‘False And Outrageous
John Travolta’s attorneys want Gawker to remove a post (titled "The Secret Sex Life of John Travolta") on their site that recounts, via a book by author Robert Randolph, the actor regularly engaged in sex with men at public saunas. Travolta’s legal team sent a letter with the request to the website on the same day as the birth of his son. They also called allegations that he is gay “false and outrageous.”
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports:
The lawyer calls the claims "blatant defamatory lies" from a "unreliable source," pointing out the author previously suffered permanent brain damage, which he has acknowledged on his own website.
Singer also notes the claims "go back fifteen years, he (Randolph) has waited until now to peddle these phony tall tales."
Travolta’s lawyer is demanding the immediate and permanent removal of the Randolph post and "the publication of an prominent retraction of the false and defamatory statements."
The full five-page letter from Travolt’as legal team is up on the Gossip Cop website.

Gay Vultures Being Forced To Mate With Females
This sounds like a birdbrain ex-gay therapy scheme.
German zookeepers are forcing two male vultures who prefer nesting together to mate with females, sparking outrage from gay rights activists who accuse the zoo of discriminating against birds of a different feather.
The trouble began back in March, when Guido and Detlef, two Griffon vultures, decided to move in together.
The lovebirds began crafting a two-man nest out of stray twigs in a communal birdcage at their zoo in the town of Munster, in northwest Germany.
Both birds are predatory males, but seemed to enjoy one another’s company more than that of any female.
They spent their days grooming one another with their beaks and fortifying their nest — though other vultures occasionally stole their building materials, as if to spite them.
"They always sat so closely together. They defended their nest from the other vultures," the zoo’s curator, Dirk Wewers, told The Daily Telegraph of Australia.
Zookeepers separated the two and now Detlef is being forced to unsuccessfully mate with a female vulture. According to Wewers, Detlef has not shown any interest in the female vulture.
Protesters and bloggers are speaking out on the gay vultures’ rights. Said one blogger: “This is like in the dark middle ages, forcibly making a creature sexually re-orient itself by tearing its partner from its side."

Dan Savage Tells CNN That It Must Stop Giving Platforms to Hate Group Leaders Like the FRC’s Tony Perkins
CNN ran a segment on bullying and hate crimes inspired by the SPLC’s recent report and their designation of 13 new organizations as "hate" groups.
Dan Savage tells Kyra Phillips, who is incredulous over the numbers of violent crimes committed against gay people, that change must begin with organizations like CNN, which give platforms to leaders of hate groups like the Family Research Council, which masquerade as religious organizations.
UPDATE: Savage says, "The question about what could be done to lower the rate of anti-gay hate crimes was the planned final question in the segment, CNN knew I was going to slam ‘em when they asked it, and they had me on anyway. Which is to CNN’s credit."

FOX News Rejects Ad Advocating Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’
FOX News has rejected an ad advocating for repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell", produced by the Palm Center.
In the ad, military officials describe lifting the gay ban as a non-issue.
Said Palm Center Director Aaron Belkin in a press release: “I am surprised that Fox News would reject an ad featuring allied Generals, given that both host Bill O’Reilly and guest contributor Liz Cheney have expressed support for open gay service. This is an important time for input from all sides on this issue, and I hope Fox will reconsider.”
Joint Chiefs Chair Mullen: U.S. ‘Clearly Not Leading’ on Civil Rights
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Michael Mullen is lauded in GQ’s Men of the Year issue.
Ana Marie Cox asks him about many of the issues facing the military today, including the impending repeal of "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" which he spoke out for earlier this year before the Senate.
Q: In your "Don’t ask, don’t tell" testimony earlier this year, you argued that the policy is a threat to morale, because it undermines the honor and integrity of soldiers. What led you to that line of thinking?
I have a very difficult time leading an organization—one of whose pillars is integrity—and asking people to lie every single day they come to work.
Q: It is widely accepted that the army’s decision to integrate pushed the culture at large closer to acceptance of civil rights. Do you think a repeal of DADT could have a similar effect?
On the issue of integration, the military led society. With respect to this issue, we’re clearly not leading. There are many institutions throughout the country that have made this decision some time ago. So in terms of the direct comparison? I’d say that back then the military was in the lead, and right now I think society is in the lead.
Q: What do you think is the biggest practical obstacle to repeal?
Actually, I don’t know that at this point. There are a bunch of areas that have to be resolved: housing benefits, those kinds of things. What I’m most concerned about is whether or not a change like this would impact readiness or unit cohesion, retention, or recruiting. Those are the areas that we’re focused on. I just don’t know the answers yet. But if the law changes, there’s no question we’ll follow it. Absolutely.

The Vatican on Tuesday confirmed and clarified remarks from a new book by Pope Benedict in which he suggested there was an appropriate use for condoms in curbing the spread of HIV and AIDS, specifically in the instance of prostitution.
The Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican’s spokesman, said that for Benedict, the use of condoms by people infected with H.I.V. could be “the first step of responsibility, of taking into consideration the risk to the life of the person with whom there are relations.”
“Whether it’s a man or woman or a transsexual,” he added.
The Benedict did not endorse the use of condoms or change official church teaching — which still strongly opposes contraceptives. His words ricocheted around the globe, greeted with anger from some conservative Catholics and enthusiasm from health workers in Africa, where the AIDS problem is the worst. The pope also considers the continent to be a major area of growth for the church.
The Vatican still holds that condom use and artificial birth control is immoral. However, the reassessment on condom use to help prevent disease carries profound significance, particularly in Africa where AIDS is rampant.
The development came on a day when U.N. AIDS officials announced that the number of new HIV cases has fallen significantly, thanks to condom use and a U.S. medical journal published a study showing that a daily pill could help prevent spread of the virus among gay men.
"This is a great day in the fight against AIDS … a major milestone," said Mitchell Warren, head of the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition

Currently in a committed relationship, Ricky said he’s not ready to reveal his partner’s identity just yet. "We know it’ll happen eventually. It’s not something we think about every day," he said. "We are happy. My kids love him. He loves my kids. We’re in love with each other."
As for future marriage plans, Martin said, "I want to have that option. I pay my taxes. How come people can have that option and not me? I guess we’re working on it little by little."
Martin revealed last March that he is gay.
He told Mario he has his young twin boys to thank. "I knew that sooner or later I’d have to. I just couldn’t take it anymore… and obviously, my kids, I want them to live a life with pride and not have to leave the house having to lie to me," the singer said.
Martin added that when his boys get a little older and start to ask why they don’t have a mommy, he’ll tell them, "I am mommy, what’s wrong? I am mommy and daddy."

Barney Frank says LGBT Legislation Has ‘No Chance’ of Passing Next Year
Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) tells the Washington Bladethat Democrats will be there to block any anti-gay legislation proposed by the Republican majority in the Senate, but warns not to expect any pro-LGBT legislation to get passed:
“Next year there’s no chance of anything happening,” he said of pro-LGBT legislation. “There’s zero chance.”
He added, “It will be a status quo. They don’t have the votes to hurt us but we don’t have the votes to advance anything in the cause.”
Frank also said he was certain that Republicans would fail in an attempt to overturn D.C.’s same-sex marriage law.
“Do you think Barack Obama is going to sign a bill to repeal the D.C. marriage law,” he asked. “It won’t go through the Senate. There is no chance that could happen. None—zero.”
Frank noted that only five out of 179 House Republicans voted earlier this year to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
“The Republicans have become much more anti-gay in their voting patterns,” he said. “There is zero chance of anything good happening with Republicans in control of the House.”
Frank said he was "hopeful" about passing ‘DADT repeal’ legislation in the lame duck Senate, which is perhaps all one can be at this point.

Croatian Football Federation President Says No Place for Gays on Team: ‘Only Normal People Play Football’
Croatian Football Federation President Vlatko Markovic is under fire for remarks he made about gays in a recent newspaper interview, the Croatian Times reports:
Croatian gay and lesbian associations have condemned Croatian Football Federation president Vlatko Markovic after he said there was no place for homosexuals in the national team.
"While I’m a president of the Croatian Football Federation, there will be no homosexuals playing in the national team", Vlatko Markovic said in an interview with Croatian national daily Vecernji List.
Asked whether in his career he has met a homosexual footballer, he has replied:
"Luckily, only normal people play football".
Gay and lesbian associations have informed the Croatian media that they will sue the Football Federation President for discrimination.
They also intend to report Vlatko Markovic to UEFA.
Croatia exited the recent World Cup in the qualifying round.
Mystery Missile Launched Over California Coast
A missile was launched off the Southern California coast Monday night. Nobody will say who fired it.
Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO speculated with CBS News:
"When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.
‘It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine … to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that,’ speculated Ellsworth. Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America’s power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn’t believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific."
National Association of Realtors Votes to Prohibit Discrimination Based on Sexual Orientation
At the National Association of Realtors annual meeting this year in New Orleans, the delegate body approved an anti-discrimination measure:

The Delegate Body decision confirms a vote by the Board of Directors in May."

Vancouver Man Gets Six Years in Prison for Assault That Left Gay Man Brain-Damaged
Shawn Woodward was sentenced today to six years in prison for an "unprovoked attack, driven by homophobia," according to the judge, for an assault on 62-year-old Ritch Dowrey which left Dowrey with permanent brain damage.
"Woodward, 37, punched Dowrey in the face in the Fountain Head Pub, a gay bar in Vancouver’s West End, March 13, 2009, causing Dowrey to fall unconscious on to a tile floor.
Woodward was charged with aggravated assault. Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Jocelyn Palmer rejected Woodward’s evidence that Dowrey had touched his crotch before the assault.
She said the evidence showed that Dowrey — who was celebrating his retirement that night — had twice approached Woodward and asked if he could buy him a beer and had merely touched his shoulder.
However, Woodward responded: ‘I’m not like that,’ meaning ‘I’m not gay,’" said the judge. As he was leaving the pub, Woodward sucker punched Dowrey and then stepped over him to get to the door, Palmer said. ‘Mr. Dowrey had no opportunity to defend himself,’ the judge said. Patrons held Woodward outside the pub and he told them Dowrey was ‘a faggot’ who deserved what he got."
According to friends, Dowrey now has no memory and is living in a care facility because he can’t care for himself.
Said Dowrey’s friend Lindsay Wincherauk: "Ritch on March 13, 2009, was this really super happy, fun-loving, good guy who encouraged everyone.
Since the event, Mr. Dowrey has no recollection of today, yesterday, years before. He’s happy to see you but he’s not the same person … it’s like he died that day."

Anti-Gay Bullying Blamed in Suicide of Pennsylvania Teen
Anti-gay bullying is being blamed for the suicide of 14-year-old Brandon Bitner of Middleburg, Pennsylvania on Friday. Bitner walked 13 miles before throwing himself in front of a truck, the Daily Item reports:
Freshman Brandon Bitner, 14, of Mount Pleasant Mills, ran in front of the truck at 3 a.m. near Liverpool, according to state police at Newport. The boy’s family discovered him missing at 3:45 a.m., and contacted police.
The road was closed for about three hours after the crash.
There seems to be little doubt in the students’ minds why Bitner did what he did. “It was because of bullying,” friend Takara Jo Folk wrote in a letter to The Daily Item.
“It was not about race, or gender, but they bullied him for his sexual preferences and the way he dressed. Which,” she said, “they wrongly accused him of.”
His death came just days after an anti-bullying assembly at the high school, which, according to district Superintendent Wesley Knapp, was not held in response to any specific problems at the school, but because it is an issue Principal Cynthia Hutchinson has always felt strongly about.
After the assembly, according to student Briana Boyer in another letter to The Daily Item, “No one took it seriously, and joked around about it.”
Former student Erin Barnett sent a letter as well, blaming the school, saying that when students report bullying, “Nothing is done.”
Bitner was reportedly a talented musician. The school has provided a counseling center for students.

Jim Carrey Speaks Out Against Anti-Gay Bullying
In an interview with MTV News regarding his upcoming role in the gay romance I Love You Phillip Morris, Jim Carrey speaks out against anti-gay bullying.
"This is a horrible thing to be bullied, and to feel like an outcast is a terrible thing.
"It’s just so an old thing, an old antiquated way of thinking that you can’t have anymore. Anybody who bullies anybody for any reason is no friend of mine.
Frankly, I can’t imagine hitting a human being for any reason except self-preservation, if I was attacked.
Your sensibilities are different when you’re a school kid and there’s gang mentality, but it ain’t cool."
Carrey adds: "Some of the most valuable people in my life are gay. People that bring magical, amazing gifts and contributions to my life. I would say to kids out there when they’re engaging in these kinds of isolations of people, someday you’re going to want those people in your life.
You’re going to need those people in your life, and you’re not going to want that on your conscience."
Here is the trailer for Carrey’s new movie that is expected to be out within the next month.

Hold ‘Kiss-in’ In Front Of Pope
It happened today as the Pope drove by a large crowd in Barcelona in his "Popemobile." The ‘kiss-in’ was held to protest the homophobic stance of the Pope and Catholic Church. The CBC reports:
About 200 people protested against Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday by jeering and staging a gay "kiss-in." The protest by gays and lesbians took place as Benedict was being driven in his bullet-proof popemobile to celebrate mass at the city’s iconic basilica, La Sagrada Familia (Holy Family).
The Pope did not react to the gay-kiss demonstration near the church, and the protesters were outnumbered by thousands of flag-waving supporters of the pontiff.

Bishop Gene Robinson To Retire In 2013
Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church, announced today to New Hampshire’s diocesan convention that he will retire at the end of 2013. It appears as if the decision was made primarily due to the negative attention he has received from all over the world since his historical election in 2003. The reason for the lengthy time period, he explains, is to allow for what he refers to as "a smooth and unhurried process of transition, for the diocese and for (himself)."
The New York Times reports on the unexpected news:
The news took some by surprise because Bishop Robinson is an energetic 63-year-old, and mandatory retirement age for Episcopal bishops is 72. He has led a relatively stable and healthy diocese, despite predictions by some that his election would undermine the Episcopal Church in New Hampshire.
The reason to depart, he said in a speech delivered at the close of the annual convention of his diocese, is that being at the center of an international uproar has taken a toll on him and on the diocese.
“Death threats, and the now worldwide controversy surrounding your election of me as bishop, have been a constant strain, not just on me, but on my beloved husband, Mark” and on Episcopalians in the state, he said.
But those who know Bishop Robinson say he has no intention of retiring from public life. His status as a symbol in the international gay rights movement means that after he steps down, he will have no shortage of platforms from which to preach his message that God blesses gay relationships too. (Through a spokesman, he declined interview requests.

Update: We met and hung out with Steven Saturday night at The Eagle/Pegasus in Pittsburgh for a bit. We wanted to see if he was as sweet in person as he was on our Talk It Out show http://www.outonline.com Friday. Also wanted to see if the reviews in Pittsburgh’s Out newspaper were accurate. Steven is a very, handsome, charming and an well-educated guy that greeted all that approached him with appreciation and gratitude.
